more... In "Subterranea", Leifur is inspired by a legend of a cave where unsuccessful watchdogs were abandoned. They were left in the cave because they failed to guard its master´s house. With this starting point, Leifur combined pictures of Icelandic lava tubes and Lithuanian watchdogs.
Kristina’s series “O Tannenbaum” takes place downtown Reykjavik. Photographer explores her current hometown by following peculiar landmarks – abandoned Christmas trees. “Every year after Christmas, Reykjavik becomes a “mass grave” for Christmas trees. You’d see them everywhere – streets, backyards, kindergartens and even ocean. Over time, many of the trees are taken away to recycling centers, but quite a few are left abandoned and roam the streets.”
Although Kristina´s and Leifur´s photo series are both individual projects with their own narratives, they still have a connection that makes them worth viewing together. In a way, they are both working with the same theme, abandonment. Kristina and Leifur both explore and question cultural traditions and rituals. At the same time, they are investigate alien surroundings in urban environment. There are interesting contrasts in their works as well as in their own personal lives: Kristina comes from Lithuania but worked on her project in Iceland while Leifur comes from Iceland but worked on his project in the suburbs of Kaunas, Lithuania.
