A series of photographs taken in Phoenix Sky Harbor airport
more... In total I spent about 36 hours in Phoenix, and spent most of the time wandering around the city, taking photographs. However, much to my surprise, I found the most interesting photographic subjects were to be found in the airport (Phoenix Sky Harbor) and the surrounding area.
When I first arrived in Phoenix, I wanted to go out and explore the city and gave very little consideration to the airport. On the return journey, however, as I was heading home, I was exhausted and could only bear to spend a couple of hours in the oppressive heat and sunshine of downtown Phoenix. Defeated and tired, I headed for the airport, seeking rest and shelter from the outdoor elements. My hopes of a relaxed nap in a quiet, peaceful airport were quickly dashed. Every single television screen in the airport was broadcasting a Republican Presidential Debate with the volume cranked up to the maximum. The events on screen resembled a rabble of childish imbeciles throwing insults and slurs at each other while avoiding any meaningful discussion. Donald Trump was, of course, the chief offender, his idiotic and offensive ramblings blaring across the airport.
Many people in the airport went about their business and pretended they couldn’t hear or see the televisions, others sat in their chairs watching diligently, a look of concern on their faces, while others sniggered and made jokes about the theatrics unfolding on screen. Perhaps I was energised by the strange atmosphere enveloping the airport, or maybe I was desperate for a distraction, but I left my seat and began to walk around, taking the odd photo. The longer I spent taking photographs, the more frenzied I became, egged on by the ridiculous scenes coming from the televsions. After a couple of hours of this I was ready for a long, deep sleep. Over the PA system they announced that my flight was boarding. I walked to the gate, got on the plane and slept for hours.
