The images that make up this series were taken in China during several stays starting in 2011. Country of extremes, modern China offers endless and unexpected situations. It is the most populous nation in the world; it has the second largest economy; and its population is living at the crossroads of deep-seeded traditions and a bourgeoning modern awareness. This all provides for a permanent show of variations. Chinese society is rapidly adopting "market socialism", melding communist ideology and individualist practice. More broadly, this photographic series questions the role of the individual in a society so focused on the masses; whether collectivist or consumerist. Riding between fiction and documentary, this photographic essay introduces the author’s imagination to reveal a unique story about contemporary China.
