Frame documents strangers beside the sea in a coastal town in Sussex where I lived as a teenager, and where I regularly return to visit my father. Although I am not in contact with anybody else there, I always wonder if I will recognise people that I used to know. I began the Frame series in 2014, photographing from a beach shelter near the centre of town where there are often a lot of people. I position my camera to face the sea so that if people observe me as they pass by they are uncertain whether they are the subject of the photograph or a disruption. The scratched glass and intensity of the weather and light abstract the images and create borderline portraits. The textures of the environment at that moment become imprinted on the figures obscuring their identities.
